Rhyming Chef to Serve as Celebrity Chef


LOW BAY, Barbuda-Lighthouse Bay Resort, an exclusive private island getaway in Barbuda, Eastern Caribbean, just a 15-minute flight from Antigua, announces the appointment of Barbuda native and internationally-known Chef Philman George, the “Rhyming Chef,” as celebrity chef in residence at the resort from Nov. 16, 2009 to March 31, 2010. George recently shot eight episodes of cooking on property at Lighthouse Bay Resort to be aired nationally this year on the Canadian Bite Television channel.

He has produced and hosted several cooking shows combining the culinary arts with hip hop culture, making appearances on morning shows throughout Canada. George is currently Executive Chef at the Island Yacht Club, a private power boating and sailing club, on Toronto’s Muggs Island. At age 29, he has established himself not only as a promising culinary star, but on the hip hop scene, as well.
Born in Barbuda, and raised in Toronto, George enrolled in the culinary management program at George Brown College. His techniques were fine-tuned under the direction of Executive Chefs Louis Panotier and Daniel Villet, both hailing from Martinique. He expanded his repertoire to include Italian, French, Californian, Caribbean and Asian Fusion cuisine and worked overseas as the Chef de Partie in Perth Australia’s gold plate award-winning restaurant, The Red Herring, and in Barbuda’s first solar-powered beach bar and grill, Uncle Roddy’s.

CELEBRITY COOK OFF` KICK STARTS FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL

Some of Belfast`s top chefs have been showing off their skills and entertaining the crowds at St. George`s Market to mark the start of the Belfast Food and Drink Festival 2007.

Much to the delight of assembled crowds at the Saturday market, a culinary battle was held between Nick Price of Nick`s Warehouse and Simon McCance of Ginger.

Members of the public had an opportunity to taste some of the delicacies created and pick up some top tips while being entertained by the Martello Jazz Band.

Councillor Michael Browne, Chairman of Belfast City Council`s Development Committee, was among those who enjoyed the carnival atmosphere.

“The Belfast Food and Drink Festival 2007 aims to showcase the city`s fantastic culinary offering, highlighting the quality of our local produce so skilfully served up in a range of superb restaurants.

"Belfast City Council is proud to be at the forefront in developing this annual celebration along with BVCB. This is an exciting start to the Festival and will set the scene for four weeks of food and drink events and promotions for locals and visitors to Belfast to enjoy.

“It is wonderful to see the best of the city`s celebrity chefs - Nick Price and Simon McCance – along with the best of local producers - launch the festival with fresh market produce and all the fun of the Market.”

Other events during the Belfast Food and Drink Festival include a Jenny Bristow master class in W5, cookery demonstrations in St George`s Market and the Chilli Fest in Custom House Square (part of the Open House Festival), as well as food and wine tastings and gourmet theme nights.

In addition, special menus will be featured throughout September in restaurants, bars and hotels across the city. Diners will have their taste buds tantalised with prices for two set courses starting from just £10 for lunch and £15 for dinner.

Appetisers: Food and drink news in Yorkshire

Countryside Live, a festival of farming displays, food and drink, takes place on October 25 and 26 at the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate. Among the livestock displays and craft stalls are a number of fun foodie events, including a best sausage competition and a cookery theatre. The theme of the theatre is chefs on a shoestring, and cooks attempting to rustle up treats on a budget include Andrew Pern of The Star Inn at Harome.

Leeds fine-dining institution Anthony's has received yet more national acclaim. The Restaurant Magazine's first ever Top 100 Restaurant list, which was announced last week, named Anthony's the 38th best restaurant in the UK. The Leeds restaurant chain has also announced the opening date for its Corn Exchange-housed food emporium The Piazza, which will be ready for the public on November 18.

We can hold off no longer - Christmas menus are here. One of the most enticing we've seen is from lovely Leeds restaurant Brassiere Blanc (pictured), which is quite reasonable at £25 for three courses. We like the look of the terrine of whole chicken livers with balsamic shallots, roast belly of Lincolnshire pork, buttered cabbage and green apple sauce and Christmas pudding and brandy butter.
